Buccaneers U-18’s secured their place in the Connacht final with a fine workmanlike victory over a hardworking Corrib team in Headford on Sunday. Buccs played into a very strong breeze in the first half but, in spite of this, were unfortunate to only be in front 12-9 at half time with two fine team tries by Connacht lock Martin Fallon and winger Killian O'Sullivan and one conversion from outhalf Michael Byrne. The Corrib outhalf scored three penalties from distance with the aid of the strong breeze to keep them very much in contention.

Buccs had the elements in the second half but their mettle was tested when the Corrib standoff converted another penalty ten minutes into the half to level the scores. Sensing victory Corrib tried to push on but the Buccs defence was rock solid and three tries in the last 15 minutes, two from Byrne and one from Connacht and Ireland underage star Darragh Murray (two converted by Byrne) sealed a 31-12 win.

Victory was celebrated with a fine rendition of the “Brothers Malone” and the lads now square up for a final against Ballinasloe in the Sportsground, Galway, on Sunday next, kick off 4 p.m.
