BUCCANEERS WOMEN made a winning start to their Connacht Invitational Cup campaign when they defeated Galwegians Seconds 20-12 at Dubarry Park on Monday night. The overall performance by the Buccs ladies in this ten-a-side tournament opener was promising and the Athlone side made full use of their replacements enroute to an encouraging victory.

The homesters began well and Shannon Hennessy made a smashing early break down the right wing that almost yielded the opening score. On her next sally down that flank she went all the way to score a terrific first try and, shortly afterwards, there was a touch of déjà vu as she again scampered away to notch her second try for a 10-0 lead. The Buccs ladies nabbed a third try before halftime, Sabina Egan intercepting smartly to give the Pirates a 15-0 advantage at the interval.

Following the change of ends, the second Hennessy sister Alex got in on the scoring act to grab Buccs fourth try to ensure a bonus point. Galwegians then rallied to score two tries, one of which was converted, but Buccaneers were not to be caught with their substitutions including a debut for Ruth Duffy proving relatively seamless. There were some excellent performances in a great team effort with Sabina Egan and Shannon Hennessy leading the way.

They face Ballinasloe at Moher Road in the next pool game on Sunday, kick off 3 p.m.
