BUCCANEERS THIRDS had to work extremely hard to overcome Oughterard in the opening round of the Ard-Na-Cregg Cup when the midlanders prevailed 26-18 after a tough contest at the Co. Galway venue on Sunday.

The newcomers made a splendid start scoring a brace of tries, one of which was converted for a 12-0 advantage. George Kenny reduced the margin for Buccs when, after the Pirates had moved from side to side, the second rower powered over for a try which Ger Fallon converted before halftime. Ger Walsh then grabbed a super solo try with a break out wide from near halfway and Fallon added a smashing conversion. Darren Costello kicked three penalties while the hosts landed two penalties to leave the game finely balanced but Ronan Flanagan’s drop goal sealed the spoils in favour of the Pirates.

Flanagan and particularly Sean Flynn were pick of the Buccs backline while Kenny and Liam Doran were most prominent in the forwards battle. Buccs will be in Cup action again next Sunday but, at time of writing, the draw for the next round has not been made.
