Division 1B line-up confirmed for next season

published:Apr  30   2018

The nine clubs who will be competing with Buccaneers in Division 1B of the Ulster Bank League next season have been confirmed following last week’s final round of play-offs. Buccs return to this division along with St. Mary’s College who lost out to UCC. Ulster clubs Malone and City of Armagh are promoted from 2A which means there will be five northern sides in this division and none from Munster! So Brexit or not, sterling will be required for a handful of trips next season! Four Leinster clubs are in this division along with Buccaneers who remain the only Connacht or midlands outfit in Ireland’s top two divisions. The ten clubs in 1B are Buccaneers, Ballymena, Ballynahinch, Banbridge, City of Armagh, Malone, Naas, Old Belvedere, Old Wesley and St. Mary’s College.

Gala Awards event

Yours truly had a mix-up regarding the date for Buccaneers Annual Gala Awards event. It takes place in the Radisson Blu Hotel, Athlone, on Saturday, May 19th (not the Friday!) when presentations will be made to Buccaneers Firsts, Seconds, U-20’s and Womens teams players of the year. The club will honour our players who have worn the green of Ireland in the season just ended. Although perhaps not a vintage year results wise, the Pirates nevertheless had a baker’s dozen capped by Ireland, which is an accomplishment worthy of considerable pride for both club and the players alike. The Buccaneers Club Person of the year will also be honoured at the gala when he/she will be presented with the Michael Hanley Memorial Perpetual Cup, won last season by Tommy Conlon. Final nominations for this coveted award should be made this week to our Administrator or Secretary but, please note, only paid up members can nominate or be nominated.

Meanwhile the Connacht Awards take place at their end of season ball in Galway on Sunday next, May 6th. Martin Staunton has been nominated as Senior club player of the year and Tracey Finnerty is among the Womens nominations. The Murray brothers, Darragh and Niall, are nominated at U-18 and U-19 respectively. Leo Galvin will be recipient of the ‘Lifetime Contribution to Rugby’ accolade which is certainly well due to him.
