Corinthians 25 Buccaneers 9

BUCCANEERS THIRDS came up short against their Corinthians counterparts in the semi-final of the Ard-Na-Cregg Cup played at Corinthian Park, Galway, on Sunday when the homesters won 25-9.  A good start against the elements gave Corinthians winning momentum.

Although playing against a fresh breeze, Corinthians grabbed a seventh minute Peadar Tonery try that was converted by Kieran Dolan. Buccs responded with a Darren Costello penalty but Billy Casserly broke through for a second home try on 15 minutes for a 12-3 lead. Costello then missed two very kickable penalties for the Pirates before he regained the range on 24 minutes to reduce the arrears. Buccs were now enjoying greater possession and territory but could not translate it into scores until deep into a rather extended first half Costello hammered over a magnificent penalty from his own half with the final kick of the opening period to leave Buccs trailing 12-9 at the break.

Lashing rain now added to Buccs difficulties and Dolan was unlucky not to notch a home try soon after the restart while his 47th minute penalty rebounded off an upright. However, the decisive score arrived after 56 minutes when Ger Walsh was driven back over his own goalline and, from the resultant scrum, Mike Roche outflanked the Buccs defence much too easily for a try which the impressive Dolan converted. Although Corinthians Alan Quinn was yellow-carded on 70 minutes, they had the final say when Kelly Ryan capitalised on a Buccs error to complete the scoring with a try three minutes from the end.
Corinthians were physically stronger and generally looked the more comfortable outfit despite the best endeavours of Joe Bonnar, Sean Flynn, Ger Fallon, Keith Grehan and Gerry Glynn for Buccaneers, whose season is now completed.
