BUSY FESTIVE SEASON AT BUCCANEERS

EXILES CUP AT BUCCANEERS ON ST STEPHEN’S DAY

The traditional and seasonal Exiles Cup match takes place at Buccaneers RFC on St. Stephen’s Day when the President’s XV will take on an Exiles selection as the teams bid to capture the James Moran Exiles Perpetual Cup. The Exiles will be bidding to make it three in a row successes following their victory last year in what was a high-scoring and entertaining contest played in front of the largest attendance for some years. Hopefully favourable weather conditions will ensure another decent turnout at Dubarry Park on Tuesday next for the 26th edition of this popular fixture. The trophy and other awards will be presented post-match in The Bounty where players and spectators alike can renew auld acquaintance. Players wishing to participate should contact Cian Moran 0877974208 or Conor Moran 0868522874. I note a stalwart former Bucc Gavin Schoeman is holidaying in Athlone with his lovely wife Maria and three daughters. He looks like he could still do a good job in any team’s backrow!

BUSINESS NETWORKING LUNCH

Buccaneers RFC is hosting a BUSINESS NETWORKING LUNCH in the Sheraton Hotel, Athlone, on Friday, February 2nd at 1.30 p.m. Guest speakers will include Gary McGann (current Chairman Aryzta and Paddy Power Betfair who has held key roles at Ericsson, Gilbeys, Aer Lingus and Smurfit Kappa), Pat McDonagh (founder and CEO Supermacs) and Kingsley Aikins (founder and CEO Diaspora Matters and previously with Enterprise Ireland and CEO American Ireland Fund). This is a key Buccaneers fund-raiser this season and the club looks forward to widespread support for this event.

NEW DATE FOR TABLE QUIZ

BUCCANEERS U-17’s squad are holding a TABLE QUIZ in The Bounty with a changed date of Friday, January 5th at 8 p.m. Teams of four; entry fee €10 adult and €5 for youths. There will be prizes on offer and complimentary finger food. Here’s hoping for good support for this event during the holiday season.

5K RUN ON NEW YEAR’S DAY

Another event that is becoming a popular staple of the festive season is the New Year’s Day 5k Run which starts and finishes at Dubarry Park. This is an ideal opportunity for young and old to start 2018 in a positive manner by getting out in the fresh air, clearing the cobwebs and shedding some of the over-indulgence of the time of year. Participants are welcome to run, jog or simply walk. Contact Sinead at 0877176051 to enter. Entries also taken on the day.

WELL DONE, GUYS!

The Irish provinces had extremely successful back to back weekends in European action with Connacht demolishing French club Brive. Matt  Healy may have caught much of the attention with his four tries for the team from the West but special merit must go to Jack Carty whose 25 points were a key factor in last Saturday’s game. He enjoyed a 100% success rate with his place-kicking, cut in for a sweet try of his own and his swiftly taken smart crossfield penalty set up the coup de grace for Tom Farrell’s try.

Well done too to Michael Stapleton who regaled attendees at the pre-match lunch for Buccaneers home game against St. Mary’s College. Flanker Mick, of course, played in his prime with both St. Mary’s and Athlone. Copies of his self-penned “The Hatchet Man” are in growing demand!

INTERNATIONAL MATCH FOR ATHLONE

International rugby returns to Dubarry Park early next year when IRELAND play SCOTLAND in a floodlit Club International fixture at the Athlone stadium on Friday, February 23rd.
