BUCCS HOME TO SECOND PLACED MALONE

published:Oct  30   2018

Buccaneers are home to Malone in the All-Ireland League Division 1B at Dubarry Park on Saturday with the action kicking off at 2.30 p.m. The Belfast club have won three of their opening four fixtures to move up to second place in the league table and will pose a formidable challenge for Buccs.

Malone bounced back from a heavy defeat at City of Armagh to overcome Old Belvedere 39-8 last Saturday when their local hero Chris Henry returned to active duty after injury. Their pack seems to change from week to week so perhaps coach Paddy Armstrong is still tweaking his best unit. Prop Peter Cooper and flanker Joseph Dunleavy are two key forwards along with captain James McAllister while Ireland U-20 Matthew Agnew is a promising and versatile forward. Assistant coach Josh Pentland directs operations from centre while Jack Mulligan, who joined from Queens, is a polished placekicker. David Irvine is a threat on the wing.

Buccs may have been fortunate to secure a bonus point through their late three try salvo at Ballynahinch but they were decidedly unlucky with a trio of injuries when the game was in the melting pot. At time of writing the availability or otherwise of Evan Galvin, Simon Meagher and Conor Kenny (all key components in the Pirates pack) is not known. Graham Lynch was a late cry off while Callum Boland looked like he was back a week or two too early against Hinch. However, Rory Moloney came through his exertions when called upon early in the proceedings and Kieran Joyce settled in well on his debut. Head Coach Peter O’Donnell and his backroom team may have an anxious wait on fitness reports this week. If Buccaneers can muster a near full strength crew --- and eliminate basic errors --- then this joust with Malone could be a ding-dong tussle.

Other Fixtures

BUCCANEERS J1's make the short trip to Creggs on Saturday night for Connacht Junior 1A floodlit clash that gets under way at The Green at 7.30 p.m. This young Buccs side let league leaders Monivea off the hook last time out and will be eager to atone for that setback. They lie one point below Creggs, who won promotion last season, and who peculiarly have played only three matches to date, thus having two games in hand already!

BUCCANEERS U-20’s also had disappointment last time out when losing narrowly to NUIG. They gave the Students a head start in that match but cannot afford the same latitude to St. Mary’s College when the teams clash at Templeville Road on Sunday. This J.P.Fanagan Leinster League Premier 2 fixture commences at 3 p.m. St. Mary’s were defeated 15-7 by Galwegians in Galway on Sunday.

Buccs players in Ireland squads

Buccaneers player DARRAGH MURRAY has been selected on the Ireland U-18 rugby squad travelling to Italy next week to play their Italian counterparts. The young Lisbrock, Kiltoom, native captained the Connacht U-18 squad that claimed the recent interprovincial series, defeating Leinster, Munster and Ulster in doing so. This is the promising lock's second season to be selected on this Ireland squad. He also skippered Buccaneers to a Connacht U-17 Plate success at the end of last season.

Best of luck too to ROBBIE HENSHAW who will be hoping to add to his 36 senior caps for Ireland in the forthcoming Autumn International series, the highlight of which will undoubtedly be the clash with New Zealand on November 17th.
