BUCCS AWAY TO MONIVEA in J1 league | News | Buccaneers Rugby Football Club Athlone

. . . . .

With both the Firsts and U-20’s having no matches this coming weekend, Buccaneers J1’s have pride of place on the fixtures list on Sunday when they travel to the Castle Grounds to take on Monivea in the Connacht Junior 1A League. Kick off is 2.30 p.m. for this joust between two teams that have little between them on the league table. Buccs are currently in third place, just one point and one place above Sunday’s opponents. Indeed when the teams met very early in the season in Athlone, Monivea came out on top by just a single point 11-10. The Pirates were not so well organised at that stage and will be optimistic that, if they can repeat their second half display against Connemara, they can fashion an away victory.

“Thank You”

Thank you to everyone, including a couple of guys, who attended ‘Prosecco by the Pitch’ prior to the Old Belvedere match last Saturday. Tons of style and false tan on view and it seems the ladies really had an enjoyable and successful event. Some of them even made their presence felt venturing out into the cold to cheer Buccs to victory! Ladies Day is surely an event that could become an annual feature at the club. Thanks especially to the organisers and also to our youths players who were waiters at the event.

Thanks too to everyone who supported the previous week’s Table Quiz at which there was a healthy turnout. Buccs Senior squad are holding a Table Quiz in The Bounty on Thursday, February 21st so make a note of that date, please.

Gratitude too to everyone who donated to the old clothes collection recently. I understand that about 2 tons was gathered in total and there will be another opportunity shortly for a second collection.

Good luck to John Sutton on his selection on the Ireland Clubs panel. Best of luck to Robbie Henshaw and Jack Carty; hopefully both will be selected for Ireland’s opening Six Nations game at home to England on Saturday. Remember if you were unable to source tickets for this hugely anticipated encounter, then you can catch the atmosphere and watch the game on the big screens at The Bounty! Good luck too to Colm Reilly and Niall Murray who are in the Ireland U-20 squad whose opening game is on Friday night in Cork.

Virtually all tables for Buccaneers second Business Networking Lunch are booked for this year’s event which takes place in Athlone’s Sheraton Hotel on Friday, February 15th. Four course lunch with complimentary wine from 1 p.m. Guest speakers are Ray McLoughlin, Ireland and Lions rugby legend, Daragh Feighery, General Manager of the soon to be opened Center Parcs in Ballymahon, and Kingsley Aikins, CEO Diaspora Matters (whose stories were worth the admission price alone last year!). Limited space available; contact our Administrator Geraldine at 0861732711 to book.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Therese Byrne who went to her eternal reward last week. Therese served on the club’s voluntary ladies committee for many years. She was predeceased by her husband Michael, who was President of Athlone Rugby Football Club in 1982/83 and President of the Connacht Branch of the Irish Rugby Football Union 1988/89. May she rest in eternal peace.
