Buccaneers 7 Sligo 26

published:Mar  26   2012

BUCCANEERS WOMENS team put in a very creditable performance despite losing the Connacht Womens Development League final to Sligo 26-7 at Ballyhaunis on Thursday night. They made the strong favourites and vastly more experienced Sligo work very hard to the bitter end to secure the trophy.

Showing a huge all-round improvement, the Buccettes gave as good as they got for an hour of this absorbing decider. When Sligo grabbed two tries in quick succession early in the second quarter, the Athlone girls did not let it phase them despite trailing 12-0 at halftime. With their pack putting in a terrific sustained effort, Buccs put it up to the north-westerners especially when Elaine Conlon powered through for a try which Niamh Nic Dhroma converted to tighten the scoreline to 12-7.

However, Sligo’s greater depth of match experience told in the final quarter when they added two converted tries to forge a hard-earned 26-7 win. Nevertheless, Buccs girls can be justifiably proud of their endeavours in an absorbing final. The forwards put in a storming show with Conlon, Yvonne O’Shea and Mele Kiripati to the fore. Sharon Hynds, Rose Hogan, Niamh Gough and Noelle Owen were the pick of the backs unit.

Buccaneers can reflect on wonderful progress made in their skills, fitness and teamwork in this their first competitive season. They did themselves proud and, all in all, with more hard work can look forward with justified confidence to future campaigns. Well done, ladies!
