Box Office hit for Buccs ‘OsKaRs’!

published:Apr  02   2019

Buccaneers Rugby Football Club’s “A Night at the OsKaRs” proved a massive box-office hit for the club when there was a full house for this red carpet occasion at Athlone’s Radisson Blu Hotel on Saturday night.

The style and glamour was Hollywood class --- and not just by the ladies! There was a wonderful buzz at the premieres when seven top quality mini movies were screened. Here credit goes to the voluntary casts who put in a lot of dedicated preparation and work under Kevin Rowe Events production team, who also laid on a first class show affably compered by MC Dave Harrington on the night. The large attendance thoroughly enjoyed viewing familiar faces, many totally out of character, on the big screens.

“The Field” proved the major hit on the night bagging a handful of OsKaRs including best film, best actor Jim Donnellan as ‘The Bull’ and best supporting actor Paul King as ‘The Bird’. Fiona Scerri took the best actress award for her role as the femme fatale in “Fatal Attraction” while Nicola Fogarty won the best supporting accolade for her part in “The Snapper”. Dave Connolly in the title role of “Forrest Gump” and Gilbert Barrington as harassed grandfather-to-be Dessie Rabbitte in “The Snapper” were other strong contenders for best actor. The latter’s orange tracksuit was itself worthy of an Oscar!

A hilarious “Father Ted” and a highly energetic “Blues Brothers” (their impromptu ‘live’ performance on stage a highlight of the night) both featured strong representation from Buccaneers Senior squad. If the players can reproduce the dynamic footwork of Peter Claffey and Rory Grenham and the dextrous handling shown by other players in Burgess’ lingerie department (where “Father Ted” was filmed), then Buccs can enjoy on-field success in their remaining crunch fixtures! “Sister Act” completed the line-up of films. Here our Womens players looked more angelic than ever but one cannot imagine them keeping the habits!

Buccaneers Rugby Football Club gratefully acknowledges the widespread support of all who attended the event, sponsored the various films and awards, donated the wonderful array of over 30 prizes for the monster raffle, or provided locations/props and rehearsal space for the films. The three adjudicators --- Regina Bushell, Joe McCarrick and John McGlynn --- were constructive and encouraging in their reviews of the films. Great credit goes to our Administrator Geraldine Kenny and Gerry McInerney for their input, while the club is massively indebted to Ronan Bushell who put his heart and soul (and a huge amount of time and effort) in the challenging role of co-ordinator, thus ensuring the success of “Buccs OsKaRs”.
