Congratulations to the Ireland rugby squad and mentors on achieving an all too rare Six Nations championship Grand Slam. Already assured of the championship, Ireland hit the ground running to force the pace for large swathes of an enthralling contest. They were composed and clinical for the majority of the game with their oft criticised defence being massive. Head Coach Joe Schmidt’s attention to detail came up with another trick or two to thwart the ‘auld enemy’ at Twickenham on, appropriately, St. Patrick’s Day. Incredibly, England finished second from bottom in the championship which will, no doubt, please that nice Aussie Eddie Jones! Loads of burgeoning talent in the squad including our own Robbie Henshaw who now has a Grand Slam added to his already impressive CV that includes being a British & Irish Lion as well as a PRO12 title. Other Athlone connections include physio Keith Fox and Fergus McFadden, nephew of Tony Lowry. Well done again to all.

Currently Sligo lie in third place with the midlanders lying in sixth. A home win for the Pirates would elevate them above Monivea in the league table. Kick off is now at 8 p.m.
