BUCCANEERS U-21s learned the harsh lesson that you cannot drop your concentration or workrate, especially when playing Galwegians, as they suffered what could prove a fatal 15-12 defeat in their South-West Conference Section A League match at Crowley Park, Galway, on Saturday. Buccs looked in control for long spells of this encounter but second lapses cost them dearly as Wegians snatched victory with the last kick of the game.

BUCCANEERS THIRDS maintained their firm grip on the top of the Connacht Junior 2 League with a clearcut 20-0 victory over Ballinasloe at Dubarry Park on Friday night. Promotion is now in the Pirates own destiny with just three rounds of fixtures remaining. Buccs had this game done and dusted by halftime by which time they had accumulated four tries. Mark Tormey nabbed a brace with Nicky Purcell and Peter Smith also touching down. All tries were scored out wide but none were converted. Buccs put in a super first half effort to ensure that their neighbours would not spoil this derby. However, although they continued to enjoy huge territorial dominance, the midlanders lacked precision after the change of ends to add to their tally. Substitutions may have disrupted their tempo and a “lack of steam” in the final quarter clearly did! Nevertheless, props Liam Doran and Trevor Thompson laid the foundations for dominance by the pack where the effervescent David Dunning was a constant thorn to Ballinasloe. Centres Tormey and Damien Kelly did well as did the half-back pairing of Purcell and Smith.
