UNDERAGE SUCCESSES HIGHLIGHTS OF BUCCANEERS SEASON

published:Jun  08

Opening the Annual General Meeting of Buccaneers Rugby Football Club, outgoing President Tom Meagher welcomed a sizeable attendance to the AGM held recently in The Bounty. He thanked the members for honouring him as President and he “enjoyed his time in office” despite a challenging season for the Senior squad and “a very difficult year financially for the club”. He thanked all committee members, coaches and managers, players and parents and the support of his wife Bree and family. He gratefully noted the continued generosity of our sponsors and patrons but added “we need stronger fundraising by all sections of the club”. He was proud of the successes achieved on the playing fields by so many of Buccs underage teams.

Division 1B line-up confirmed for next season

published:Apr  30

The nine clubs who will be competing with Buccaneers in Division 1B of the Ulster Bank League next season have been confirmed following last week’s final round of play-offs. Buccs return to this division along with St. Mary’s College who lost out to UCC. Ulster clubs Malone and City of Armagh are promoted from 2A which means there will be five northern sides in this division and none from Munster! So Brexit or not, sterling will be required for a handful of trips next season! Four Leinster clubs are in this division along with Buccaneers who remain the only Connacht or midlands outfit in Ireland’s top two divisions. The ten clubs in 1B are Buccaneers, Ballymena, Ballynahinch, Banbridge, City of Armagh, Malone, Naas, Old Belvedere, Old Wesley and St. Mary’s College.

CONGRATULATIONS ROBBIE & CONOR!

published:Apr  23

Congrats to Robbie Henshaw on being awarded an Address of Recognition by Westmeath County Council. This was a long overdue honour for the young Athlonian who capped a memorable week by putting in (in this scribe’s opinion) a ‘man of the match’ performance in Leinster’s blitzing of Scarlets in the Champions Cup semi-final. It was an incredible contribution by Robbie, particularly bearing in mind that he had been out for two months due to the injury sustained against Italy. We wish Robbie and this teammates continued success in next month’s final against Racing 92.

BUCCANEERS had no less than five young players wearing the green of Ireland last week. Colm Reilly and Ryan Lomas were in the Ireland U-19 squad that had mixed results against Japan.
