BUCCANEERS are home to Ballina in the final round of the Connacht Senior League. Kick off for this vital encounter at Dubarry Park is 2.30 p.m. Buccs will be chasing victory by a high margin if they are to retain the league title for a fifth season in a row. Meanwhile Ballina will be hoping to finally kick start their season as they have underperformed to date and languish at the bottom of the league table with just a solitary point.

Three Athlonians will be part of the Ireland Rugby World Cup squad and backroom team. Robbie Henshaw and Jack Carty were named in the 31 man squad last week while Keith Fox is one of the team’s key physio personnel. Fox hails from a very sporting family in the town with mother Pat being a member of the Dolan clan that includes Dessie and Gary of Westmeath and Garrycastle fame and Frankie from St. Brigid’s and Roscommon. Keith operates the successful Action Physio clinic in Blyry and he was physio at Buccaneers before moving to Connacht and then progressing to the Ireland ranks.

Two young players who came through the ranks at Buccaneers Rugby Football Club, Jack Carty and Robbie Henshaw, have both been named on the Ireland squad for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup in Japan. This is fantastic news for everyone involved at Buccaneers.

Fantastic news that two Buccaneers players JACK CARTY and ROBBIE HENSHAW have been named on the Ireland squad for the forthcoming Rugby World Cup in Japan. 

Everyone in the club is so proud of these young guys who are splendid role models. They have worked hard over many seasons improving their game and now reap the just rewards.

We wish them all the very best and hope they have memorable World Cup campaigns.

Congratulations on the treble to JACK CARTY who celebrated his 27th birthday with a Man of the Match contribution as Ireland got back to winning ways when defeating Wales 22-17 in Cardiff today. Making his first Senior start, Jack was particularly impressive in the opening half as Ireland built up a 15-3 lead. Here's hoping his performance will secure a place for the outhalf in the Ireland squad for the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

The untimely death has occurred of 20 year old JOSEPH WILSON in the wonderful care of Galway Hospice. Joseph played underage rugby at Buccaneers and the club offers heartfelt condolences to his parents Niall and Annenoelle, brothers, sisters and extended family. Joseph began playing rugby with Buccs when he was only 10 and he loved the game. May he rest in eternal peace.

Frank Daly RIP

The death has taken place of Frank Daly, Kiltoom. Frank captained Athlone Rugby Football Club in season 1954/55 when he led the club to their first Connacht Senior Cup triumph. He was a key contributor to Athlone’s first Connacht Senior League success the following year. A fullback he was capped by Connacht against Munster in 1954.
