Hello All,
Frank Young of Carrickobrien, Athlone, passed away on August 17th 2009
after a short illness. His untimely passing left a void in a lot of
people’s lives. His popularity reached far and near and to all walks
of life. Frank lived his life caring and giving and there was no end
to his sensitivity. If there was a cause he was there to help, no matter
what colour or race.
Frank worked as a farmer and agricultural advisor with Teagasc. He was
involved in the local community in a variety of ways including the Fair-trade
campaign and New Horizon, the refugee support group. He was a founder
member of the Fair-trade set up in Athlone Institute of Technology in
2008 and also a founder member of Athlone Parish Council. Frank’s passion
was hurling and he was heavily involved in Southern Gaels hurling club.
To commemorate his unforeseen passing a memorial Cycle the length of
Ireland is being organized from Malin Head to Mizen Head. The cycle
will be taking place over 5 days between July 30th and August 3rd, 2010.
The fundraising is designed to raise funds both for the South Westmeath
Hospice and a new award which will serve as a memorial to Frank Young’s
life and work. The Young Social Innovators Frank Young Memorial Award
will be established to recognise the work of young people in the midlands
who become active in such areas as social awareness and social justice.
Each participant in this charity cycle will be asked to raise €800 minimum
and pay for their own accommodation and food. Accommodation and meals
will be booked as a group to incorporate discounts. Anybody who is interested
in taking part or has any further questions please don’t hesitate to
contact me on 0879312861 or drop me an email on karlturley@campus.ie.
Get fit for a great cause.
Looking forward to hearing from ye.
Regards.
